20/03/19 Renata Domagalska

Renata Domagalska is a Polish painter who currently lives and creates in Spain. She is inspired by folklore, dance, dynamic motion of life and the human figure. In 1998 she has graduated Art School PLSP in Poznań, Poland [1].

Although there isn’t a lot of information about the artist herself, I strongly believe that her work speaks for herself. The paintings express the dynamics of dance, the movement of the body as well as the flow of the clothes. Domagalska has painted a lot of flamenco dancers, however amongst the red, sophisticated flows of red dresses traditional for Spain, there are a few paintings based on the Polish folklore. For example painting titled “Pstrokate Kwiecistosci” from 2012 [2], presents a woman from Łowicz region. What I found the most fascinating in Domagalska’s style is the combination of the detailed faces and the energetic brushstrokes which suggest the dress. This is actually an accurate representative of photographs of dancers. When dancers spin, their head tend to be staying focused on one point, so when photographs are taken it looks like the head is constantly in one place and it’s only the body that is moving. Moreover, when dancers, especially Polish folk dancers are photographed, the costumes are becoming a blur, which Domagalska has very well presented in her paintings.

Other paintings by Domagalska are inspired by different regions. For instance “Tancerka Ludowa” from 2007 [3], shows a woman from Sieradz. The artist implied it by showing delicate stripes on the red dress, showing the characteristic headache and scarf wrapped around the dancer’s shoulders.
